The Zambia Army has taken note of an old video circulating on social media showing soldiers assaulting an apprehended illegal miner in North-Western Province.
Zambia Army Spokesperson Colonel Sydney Mwewa says the soldiers involved have been positively identified as members of the Zambia Army.
Colonel Mwewa says immediate disciplinary action was taken against the soldiers, while the Platoon Commander, Lieutenant Japhet Banda, who was responsible for the troops at the time, was dismissed from the Army.
He says the Zambia Army does not condone indiscipline and that such conduct is contrary to the values of professionalism, discipline and respect for human dignity.
Colonel Mwewa says any soldier found wanting will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the Defence Act, Chapter 106 of the Laws of Zambia.
He says the Army remains committed to maintaining high standards of discipline and accountability among its personnel.
