TCZ Calls For Gastronomy To Be Recognized As Cornerstone Of Tourism

The Tourism Council of Zambia (TCZ) says gastronomy should be recognized as a cornerstone of the tourism industry.

Speaking during the second edition of the Zambian Gastronomy Awards last evening, TCZ Board Member Chanda Mwale said elevating Zambian cuisine to world-class standards can create a powerful attraction for tourists.

Ms. Mwale said innovation by young chefs is transforming local ingredients and produce into globally competitive culinary experiences, which can contribute to Zambia’s target of attracting five million tourist arrivals.

At the same event, immediate past Hotel and Catering Association of Zambia (HCAZ) President Christopher Nsenje stressed the importance of preserving Zambian cuisine, noting that the food being celebrated has a rich history and forms part of the country’s cultural heritage.

The awards recognized various players and initiatives across the gastronomy and food tourism sector, including African and international chefs and restaurants, food vendors, indigenous food and beverage brands, food bloggers and influencers, and hotels promoting African food and culture.

Other categories included traditional music and dance, agricultural and community empowerment initiatives, mixology incorporating African ingredients, media promotion of gastronomy and food tourism, traditional ceremonies promoting food and culture, and traditional costume design incorporating food and culture.
