The Zambia Civil Liberties Union, ZCLU, has condemned the arrest and detention of Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation journalist Macpherson Mukuka, calling for his immediate and unconditional release and the withdrawal of all charges against him.
Mr. Mukuka has been charged under Section 10 of the Cyber Crimes Act for allegedly recording a private meeting involving several individuals.
Acting Executive Director Derrick Chekwe says journalism is not a crime and that investigative reporting is essential in exposing wrongdoing and promoting accountability.
He says journalists often rely on evidence obtained from private meetings and conversations to bring matters of public interest to light.
