79 Arrested In Lusaka Over Suspected Cybercrime Network, Possible Human Trafficking Probed

Seventy-nine people have been apprehended in Lusaka during a joint security operation targeting a suspected cybercrime network.

The Zambia Police Service, DEC, Department of Immigration, Zambia Cyber Security Agency and other security institutions said the operation was conducted on August 23, 2026 at Evana Estates in New Kasama, following a tip-off from the public.

Those arrested comprise 35 Ugandans, 11 Chinese, 10 Zambians, 8 Kenyans, 6 Ghanaians, 5 Liberians, 2 Burundians, 1 Chadian and 1 Zimbabwean.

Police said items seized include 73 desktop computers, 6 laptops, 140 mobile phones, 5 Starlink kits, 2 external hard drives, 10 new SIM cards, 75 passports, K21,490, US$10,450 and assorted foreign currencies.

Preliminary investigations suggest the premises were being used by a newly established and highly organised network suspected of conducting cyber-related criminal activities. The full nature, scale and possible links to other networks within and outside Zambia remain under investigation.

Authorities are also examining recruitment, accommodation and working conditions of some foreign nationals. Police said preliminary information suggests some individuals may have been recruited under deceptive circumstances and that the freedom of movement of some foreign nationals may have been restricted. As a result, possible elements of human trafficking or exploitation cannot be ruled out at this stage.

Meanwhile, the Department of Immigration says 6 Ugandan nationals were found to be illegally staying in Zambia. Verification of the remaining foreign nationals is ongoing.

All 79 suspects remain in custody as investigations continue to establish the masterminds behind the network.
