Police commend zambians for peaceful conduct during elections

The Zambia Police Service has commended members of the public for the peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves during the August 13th General Elections.

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba has also praised police officers and other law enforcement agencies for maintaining law and order and securing polling stations, voters and electoral materials.

However, Mr Musamba says isolated incidents were recorded in parts of the country, including Lusaka, Kalomo, Kasama, Isoka, Mafinga, Chingola, Mkushi and Kabompo.

In Matero, Lusaka, police have apprehended nine suspects in connection with the alleged murder of 57-year-old polling agent Lovemore Chishima, who reportedly died after being assaulted at Kasamba Polling Station.

Police have also detained six men found in possession of offensive weapons, including machetes and ammunition, and are looking for Sean Tembo to assist with investigations.

In Kasama, police are investigating an attack on the residence of Acting Northern Province Permanent Secretary Beauty Undi-Phiri, allegedly involving suspected NRPUP supporters. One suspect has been apprehended.

Meanwhile, police have deployed officers to restore order following reports of rioting and road blockages in parts of Lusaka.

Mr Musamba has urged political stakeholders to refrain from announcing or circulating unverified election results, saying the law provides for the official declaration of results through the prescribed electoral process.

He has called on the public to remain calm, avoid violence and allow the law to take its course.
