Police assure Zambians of security ahead of general elections

The Zambia Police Service says it is fully prepared to provide security before, during and after the 2026 General Elections.

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba says additional police officers have been deployed across the country, including at polling stations and results centres, to strengthen security and ensure that citizens vote freely and peacefully.

Mr. Musamba says mobile patrols, crime detection operations and rapid response teams have also been enhanced in all provinces.

He says the campaign period has generally remained peaceful, despite a few isolated incidents of political violence.

The Inspector General has urged voters to return home after casting their ballots and avoid loitering around polling stations unless they are accredited by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

Mr. Musamba has also warned members of the public against spreading unverified election results, hate speech, misinformation and disinformation on social media.

He has urged political leaders and their supporters to exercise tolerance and resolve disputes through lawful institutions rather than violence.

Mr. Musamba has further warned that unlawful assemblies, road blockages, destruction of property and attacks on individuals will attract police intervention, regardless of political affiliation.

He has assured the nation that police will enforce the law firmly and impartially while respecting human rights.
