Newly appointed Minister of Health, Professor Roma Chilengi, has hit the ground running on his first day in office, barely 24 hours after being sworn in by President Hakainde Hichilema.
Professor Chilengi today met senior management at Ndeke House in Lusaka, signalling an immediate start to work and a strong focus on advancing the Government’s health sector agenda.
Speaking during the meeting, Professor Chilengi said there was no time to lose, stressing the need for the Ministry of Health to move with urgency in implementing the Government’s health priorities.
“We are starting really with our feet running, and I think there are a lot of things that need to be done. So, you’ll be seeing us with sleeves rolled up and sneakers on, and not in suits, running to push the agenda, as the instructions from the Head of State are clear,” Professor Chilengi said.
He said the Ministry would focus on translating the Government’s directives into tangible results in the health sector.
Professor Chilengi brings extensive experience in public health and health systems. He previously served as COVID-19 Advisor to the President, before becoming Health Advisor and Director General of the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI).
He was later nominated to Parliament before being appointed Minister of Health.
His appointment comes as the Ministry continues to implement measures aimed at strengthening Zambia’s health system and improving access to quality healthcare services.
