Labour Breaches Cost New Century Diamond Hotel K120,000

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has imposed an administrative penalty of one hundred and twenty thousand kwacha on New Century Diamond Hotel for multiple violations of labour laws.

Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer Mwaka Ndawa says an inspection at the hotel established that some employees were not given valid written employment contracts, while the hotel also failed to maintain records of oral contracts, a payroll and provide workers with payslips.

Ms. Ndawa says the hotel was also found paying some workers below the prescribed minimum wage and making salary deductions from employees who were sick despite the workers presenting certified sick notes.

She says the hotel, which employs more than 25 workers, had also failed to register as an employer with the Office of the Labor Commissioner and was operating without a qualified Human Resource Officer.

Ms. Ndawa says the ministry has directed the hotel to regularise the employment contracts, place all workers on payroll, provide payslips, pay outstanding salary underpayments and stop unauthorised deductions.

The hotel has also been ordered to register with the Office of the Labour Commissioner and engage a qualified Human Resource Officer.

The Ministry says salary arrears and separation packages owed to affected workers have since been paid.

The hotel has been given until Friday, September 25th, 2026, to pay the K120,000 administrative penalty.
