The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced that electoral campaign activities will continue as scheduled following President Hakainde Hichilema’s declaration of a five-day national mourning period in honour of the late former Vice President, Dr. Guy Scott.
In a statement, Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the Commission had received public enquiries on whether campaign activities should be suspended during the period of national mourning.
Mr. Kasaro clarified that campaign activities do not fall under activities of an entertainment nature, which have been suspended during the national mourning period.
He said the Commission’s position is consistent with established precedent, noting that electoral campaign activities also continued during the national mourning period following the death of Zambia’s First President, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, in 2021.
Mr. Kasaro, however, urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns in a dignified, respectful and peaceful manner, mindful of the solemnity of the national mourning period.
He further reminded all stakeholders to continue adhering to the Electoral Code of Conduct and all applicable electoral laws and regulations.
