CCPC Alerts Zambians to Global Recall of Over 250,000 Land Rover SUVs

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has alerted consumers in Zambia to a global recall affecting selected Land Rover Range Rover, Discovery and Defender SUVs manufactured between 2020 and 2026.

In a statement, CCPC Senior Public Relations Officer Florence Zaza said the alert follows information received from the COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission (CCCC) regarding a recall initiated by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) over a safety concern.

Ms. Zaza said the issue involves the connection to the driver’s airbag at the clockspring, which may develop fretting corrosion over time.

She explained that this could increase resistance in the driver’s airbag circuit, potentially causing the airbag to fail to deploy properly when required.

According to information provided by CCCC, the recall affects 250,857 vehicles globally, including vehicles in South Africa and the United States. Eleven affected vehicles have been imported into Zambia.

The affected models are:

* 2022–2026 Land Rover Range Rover – 69,685 vehicles globally.
* 2021–2026 Land Rover Discovery – 83,620 vehicles globally.
* 2020–2026 Land Rover Defender – 97,552 vehicles globally.

CCPC is urging owners of affected vehicles to visit an authorised Jaguar Land Rover dealership or local importer/distributor, where a proactive lubricant will be applied to the connector terminals at no cost.

The Commission says it has engaged Jaguar Land Rover importers and distributors operating in Zambia to facilitate the identification of affected vehicles and ensure consumers receive the necessary information and appropriate remedial action.

CCPC has reminded consumers that product recalls are an important consumer protection measure aimed at addressing identified safety risks and preventing potential harm.

Consumers who require further information or experience challenges accessing the recall remedy are encouraged to contact the Commission through its official communication channels.

The CCPC says it will continue working with CCCC and other relevant stakeholders to monitor implementation of the recall in Zambia and facilitate coordinated regulatory intervention where necessary.
