Finland has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Zambia’s development agenda, with mining, education and private-sector partnerships identified as key areas of cooperation between the two countries.
Finnish Ambassador to Zambia Marja Rosvall said strengthening partnerships between Finland and Zambia would be important in promoting trade, investment and knowledge sharing, particularly over the next five years.
Ambassador Rosvall said this when she paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Acting Permanent Secretary, Anthony Chilengi, at his office in Lusaka.
She identified mining as a key area of cooperation, noting that Finland is a mining nation with extensive experience in gold and other mineral resources.
Ambassador Rosvall said Finnish companies and technologies were already contributing to Zambia’s mining sector, particularly in promoting more sustainable and efficient mining operations.
She disclosed that the Finnish Embassy had prioritized mining this year as part of efforts to strengthen trade and business relations between the two countries.
The Ambassador further said preparations had commenced for the 2027 Finland Business Week, scheduled for April, which would provide a platform for Finnish and Zambian companies to explore investment and business opportunities.
Ms. Rosvall also confirmed her intention to attend the upcoming Mining Insaka, saying the gathering would provide another opportunity to deepen engagement and strengthen partnerships in the mining sector.
She commended the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development for its continued cooperation and support for Finnish events and visiting delegations.
Ambassador Rosvall said Finland was committed to building on the strong bilateral relationship established by her predecessor, Ambassador Halinen.
In his welcome remarks, Mr. Chilengi expressed the Ministry’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Finland, particularly in expanding Zambia’s mining sector beyond copper production.
He said Zambia was exploring opportunities to add value to its mineral resources and strengthen activities across the mining value chain.
Mr. Chilengi also highlighted the upcoming Mining Insaka as an important platform that would bring together stakeholders from across the mining industry to discuss strategies for developing the sector and promoting shared prosperity.
