GOVERNMNET has moved in to contain and combat cholera cases that have been reported in Chibombo District.
Central Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe says the number of confirmed cholera cases so far stands at 44.
Dr. Mwanakampwe says two deaths have been recorded, both being community deaths involving people who reportedly self-administered medication instead of seeking medical attention.
He says four patients were admitted while three were discharged in the last 24 hours as health authorities continue responding to the patients.
The Permanent Secretary disclosed that overcrowding, consumption of contaminated water and food as some of the key drivers of the disease.
He says Government has activated a multi-sectoral team to coordinate measures aimed at containing the outbreak.
Speaking during a press briefing he noted that chlorine, water purification materials and medical supplies are being provided to affected communities, while alternative water sources are also being made available.
He has appealed to members of the public to avoid self-medication and seek medical attention immediately when a person develops persistent diarrhoea.
Mayfair Insurance Company has donated wheelchairs and cleaning materials to Matero Level One Hospital and the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka.
