Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sport as a vehicle for youth development, community cohesion and international cooperation.
Speaking at the 15th Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Cup, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe said the tournament demonstrates the enduring partnership between Zambia and Japan while promoting karate, Japanese culture and friendship between the two countries.
Mr. Kangwa said karate was introduced to Zambia in the 1970s and has grown into a widely practised discipline, with about 8,000 Zambians participating across various styles.
The Permanent Secretary said the tournament, which attracts karatekas from Zambia and neighboring countries, also plays an important role in instilling resilience, self-discipline, respect and self-defence among young people, helping to keep them away from crime and other destructive behaviors.
He further said government is committed to ensuring equitable support for all sports codes and integrating martial arts and other sporting disciplines into the school curriculum under Physical Education.
Mr. Chileshe noted that karate’s Olympic recognition and debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games should inspire local athletes to aim higher, while commending the Embassy of Japan and Toyota Zambia/CFAO Mobility for their continued support towards the development of karate in Zambia.
Mayfair Insurance Company has donated wheelchairs and cleaning materials to Matero Level One Hospital and the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka.
