GOVERNMENT WARNS AGAINST INCITEMENT TO VIOLENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Government has warned individuals against using social media platforms to promote violence, hatred and threats against political leaders, saying such conduct will not be tolerated.
Speaking at the press briefing Secretary to the Cabinet Mr Patrick K. Kangwa says government has noted an increase in inflammatory social media content before, during and after the 2026 Presidential and General Elections.
Mr Kangwa says the content includes insults, threats of harm and calls for the killing or assassination of political leaders, including the President.
He says such statements are not protected by freedom of expression and may constitute criminal conduct, adding that those responsible will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Mr Kangwa has also expressed concern over the involvement of children in political exchanges, particularly where minors are used to insult leaders and the content is subsequently circulated on social media.
He has urged citizens to exercise restraint and responsibility when using digital platforms, saying social media should be used to promote unity and constructive dialogue rather than division.
Mr Kangwa has further called on Zambians to respect the outcome of the electoral process and allow constitutional mechanisms to address any concerns arising from the elections.
He says maintaining peace, unity and stability is essential to the country’s democratic, social and economic development.
