August 13 declared public holiday for general election

Government has declared Thursday, August 13, 2026, a public holiday to allow eligible citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote in the General Election.

According to a statement issued by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, the declaration is in accordance with Article 56(2) of the Constitution of Zambia.

Mr Kangwa says the public holiday applies to both the public and private sectors, and employers are expected to comply.

He says employers should give eligible employees an opportunity to vote, while institutions providing essential services should make arrangements to maintain operations and allow their workers to cast their ballots.

Mr Kangwa has advised employees who need to travel before polling day to make the necessary arrangements with their employers.

He has clarified that only Thursday, August 13, 2026, is declared a public holiday.
