Artists stand in solidarity with detained fellows

The Fraternity of Zambian Artists has expressed concern over the reported arrest and detention of musicians Moses Ng’andwe, also known as Chester MoPower, Felix Mangani Phiri, also known as Felix Ndangeni Inshila, and comedian Winston Ngosa, also known as IDC Light Comedy, in Western Province.

In a statement, the group linked the arrests to a recent attack on musician Clifford Dimba, also known as General Kanene, in Shibuyunji District, and earlier reported attacks on artists Richy Bizzy, Kass K, Shenky and Kadafi in Solwezi.

The Fraternity says it stands in solidarity with the affected artists, their families and the wider creative community. It notes that artistic expression is protected under the Constitution and is a pillar of democracy and national development.

“The fraternity of Zambian artists, hereby reaffirms that artistic expression is an indispensable pillar of democracy, cultural identity, and national development. Artists have historically served as the conscience of society by expressing ideas, documenting social realities, preserving culture, and stimulating public dialogue.”

The group has called on authorities to uphold the constitutional rights of the detained artists, ensure fair and transparent proceedings, and facilitate their release on bail or police bond where legally appropriate.

It further urged the Zambia Police Service to exercise its mandate lawfully and proportionately, and to refrain from any actions that may intimidate or suppress lawful artistic expression.

The Fraternity has also appealed to the public and the artistic community to remain peaceful and law-abiding while advocating for constitutional rights.

It concluded that the protection of artistic freedom is a constitutional imperative and essential to Zambia’s democratic governance.
