Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth of Zambia’s cosmetology industry, describing the sector as a key driver of job creation, women’s economic empowerment and small business development.

Speaking during the official opening of the Cosmetology Expo in Lusaka, Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Permanent Secretary Lillian Bwalya said the beauty industry plays a significant role in creating employment, with every salon and barbershop providing jobs and skills training to between three and ten people.

Ms. Bwalya said the sector keeps thousands of young Zambians economically active, adding that about 80 percent of salon owners are women, making investment in cosmetology an investment in women’s empowerment.

She, however, urged operators to uphold high standards of hygiene and use genuine products, warning that poor sanitation and counterfeit cosmetics can pose serious health risks to consumers.

The Permanent Secretary also acknowledged that limited access to finance and inadequate formal training remain major challenges affecting the industry.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Representative Director for Business Development and Grants, Kennedy Mumba, said the Ministry remains committed to supporting the cosmetology sector through policies and programmes aimed at enhancing business growth.

Mr. Mumba said the Ministry will continue working with industry stakeholders to address challenges affecting the sector and create opportunities for entrepreneurs to thrive.

And some participants expressed happiness in participating in the first ever cosmetology expo and are hopeful will yield business opportunities..
